There's a real difference — and some companies blur it. Here's the honest version.
A water softener uses a process called ion exchange. As water passes through a resin bed, calcium and magnesium ions — the minerals that make water "hard" — are swapped out for a trace amount of sodium. Hardness isn't just reduced or disguised; it's physically removed from the water.
The result: no scale buildup on fixtures or in pipes, noticeably softer skin and hair, and a longer working life for water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines.
A conditioner uses TAC (template-assisted crystallization). It doesn't remove hardness minerals from the water — it changes their form, converting them into tiny crystals that are far less likely to stick to surfaces as scale.
No salt, no drain connection, no electricity, and zero ongoing maintenance. The honest tradeoff: the effect on skin and hair is milder than a true softener, and at Los Angeles's extreme hardness levels — often 18 grains per gallon — it's simply less effective at preventing scale than ion exchange.
If someone sells you a "salt-free softener," that's a contradiction. Salt-free systems condition — they don't soften. Both are good products. They're just not the same thing.
